Barbara Ortiz-was born in San Diego, California.  Coming from a Navy Military background, the family got transferred to the east coast, settling in New York.  

Barbara entered the New York City School System where her talent as an artist was discovered quite early.  In Elementary school she painted a Christmas tree that impressed her teacher as an outstanding piece of work.  As a result, she was encouraged to enter a citywide contest sponsored by the New York City Sanitation Department.  The theme was “Keep Our City Clean”.  Barbara entered with her poster drawing and won.  This contest was the beginning of many future ones.

 Barbara Ortiz is a graduate of the School of Art & Design.  She also attended Hunter College where she continued her art studies.  Barbara worked after school at Russell Pandell Art Studio, a studio owned by her art teacher. There she learned about advertising.  

Barbara has appeared on cable stations, radio stations and talk shows, "Art Talk" and "Art in the World hosted by Professor Stella Russell from Nassau Community College.  Barbara's favorite subjects are: People, still life with a special focus on art of many cultures.  She has used and experimented with numerous art mediums from oils, acrylics, inks, and pencils to molding clay and sand.  Having worked in the art field throughout the years Barbara has been employed in the medical field.

The vibrant  colors in her work surely describes her warm and lively personality and her feelings of art as a priority in her life.  She has exhibited her work at Elios in Greenwich Village, NY, York College, Jamaica, NY,   Dr. Russell's Art Salon in Oyster Bay, NY, Lakeview Public Library, Lakeview West Hempstead, NY as well as other locations, museums and libraries.

 Barbra is now a recent member of The Long Island Black Artist Association and is looking forward to many creative experiences to come.
